In the sprawling metropolis of Mumbai, Anisha and Aditya found it difficult to make ends meet. Limited income made it difficult for them to access educational resources that could enhance their employability prospects. When in search of support to secure a decent income, their hopes were renewed through the efforts of the Flipkart Foundation and Pratham InfoTech Foundation, whose joint effort aims to empower disadvantaged youth with essential abilities, from IT to soft skills.

In a nation where 42% of urban households have access to laptops and computers, the digital divide disproportionately affects urban slums with reduced access to computers and internet connections. This prevents youth in underserved communities from competing on an equal footing and hinders their employment prospects. Modern employers also want individuals equipped with 21^st-century skills, many of which are core soft skills needed to succeed at work.

Recognising the urgency of addressing this issue, the initiative aims to provide a more inclusive and enabling learning environment for underserved communities. The "Digital Literacy and 21^st Century Skills for Employability" initiative specifically focuses on underserved youth coming from slums or economically weaker families.
It operates across five centres each in Mumbai and Gurugram, equipping participants with essential skills. When young individuals from marginalised backgrounds enroll in these courses, they are not just gaining skills, but accessing the means for lifelong self-empowerment.

Beyond training, the initiative also provides placement and post-placement support, ensuring that these youth are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the job market.

With over 1250 youth enrolled in the program, there is a strong emphasis on developing vital skills, including:

• Problem-solving
• Decision-making
• Collaboration
• Effective communication
• Time management

Notably, the initiative has achieved a remarkable gender balance, with more than 70% of women enrolling in the program.

From imparting digital literacy and 21^st century skills to coaching aspirants for interviews, this initiative ensures that young individuals become technically competent to better leverage work opportunities. Through peer and activity-based learning, this intervention equips the next generation with the tools to escape poverty while promoting self-reliance.
