Supporting Grassroot NGOs & Core Causes

At Flipkart, there has always been great intent and enthusiasm to support initiatives on the ground. Be it supporting grassroots-level interventions, celebrating festivals with the underprivileged to spread cheer, or commemorating days of relevance as a mark of commitment to the causes, Flipkart has engaged with passion and purpose to make a difference on the ground. Some of the key interventions are listed below:

Commemorating relevant days

Children’s Day 2018

Flipkart employees visited Government Schools around Bengaluru to make the occasion special for students and teachers alike. Further, Flipkart initiated the Toys for Smile Campaign whereby for every toy purchased on Flipkart between 10th and 12th November, a toy was gifted to an underprivileged child. On Children’s Day in 2019, we raised funds for some of the vulnerable and disadvantaged children, by collaborating with Karunalaya.

Mother’s Day Campaign

Flipkart partnered with Miracle Foundation and conducted a fundraiser to aid the Foundation’s efforts to enable housemothers to continue to provide the same love and care, as our mothers do, to orphaned children across India.

Daan Utsav 2019

Flipkart celebrated the Joy of Giving Week for the first time. Flipkart partnered with Give Foundation, and raised funds for 6 NGOs namely Haritika [for nature conservation], Udayan Care [for upskilling of under-served women and girls], Goonj [supporting rural women with menstrual kits], Charlie's Animal Rescue Centre [medical care for animals], Uma Educational & Technical Society [for changing the lives of the differently-abled], and Magic Bus [for ensuring underprivileged kids complete secondary education and learn for life]

Daan Utsav 2020

During this Joy of Giving week, Flipsters committed to support in the following ways:

  • Trained school students in spoken English by committing one hour a week for 8-12 weeks for a one-on-one phone calls to promote training and building confidence
  • Build websites for NGOs so they can tell their stories to a wider audience and create impact. Being a technology company, this activity brough the best out of our employees
  • Raised funds for three high impact causes along with GiveIndia i.e., generating employment opportunities, training & upskilling; enabling empowerment through education and providing self-defence training for young girls; fighting poverty by creating sustained livelihood for migrant workers and marginalised labourers.

Celebrating together to spread festive cheer

Christmas Campaign

Over 200+ Flipkart employees brightened the lives of the children at the Samarthanam Trust for the differently-abled. They also gifted toys to the children. Further in the year 2019, as part of Christmas celebrations, we donated computers, laptops, and other IT assets to Parikrma, a school for underserved children with the objective of providing them a better learning experience.

Special Holi Cards

The ekart customer experience team has been collaborating with NGOs, working with underprivileged and differently-abled children to design cards for customers during Holi. In 2017, these cards were also sold to Flipsters. The best paintings were selected and made into cards that were sent with every delivery during the Holi sale on Flipkart.com.

Supporting Interventions towards the Armed & Military Services

Pulwama Attack

In the aftermath of the 2019 Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 44 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Flipkart came forward to support the grieving families through financial support. As we celebrated Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan, a bond of love and protection, we also engaged our sellers and customers to raise money for Bharat Ke Veer.

Disaster Relief - Natural Calamities

Natural calamities bring untold misery particularly for the underprivileged. Flipkart through its efforts has tried to provide need-based support for the underprivileged in times of distress. To aid in the relief efforts, not only did Flipkart employees voluntarily make cash contributions from their payrolls, but Flipkart also donated essential items. In many of these relief operations, Flipkart tied up with Goonj Foundation and made sure that supplies were delivered to needy people in a prompt and dignified manner. The Flipkart platform also put a hack team together overnight to make essential changes that allowed customers to donate relief material to those in need.

National Flood Relief Efforts

We partnered with Goonj and other partners like GiveIndia to support relief efforts in Assam, Bihar, Mumbai, Coastal Karnataka, Orissa & Kerala, AP, and more from 2014 onwards. During the devastating floods that caused tremendous loss of life and livelihoods, we were able to support the rehabilitation of those hit.

COVID-19 Response Initiatives

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the ways of life at an unprecedented scale across the globe including India. The adverse effects were visible on all facets of life including health, livelihood, nutrition, education including mental and emotional wellbeing. Flipkart through the joint efforts of employees, sellers as well as customers [through SuperCoins donation drive] extended relief support.

  • Distributed masks, health and safety kits including PPE, Ventilators & oxygen cylinders
  • Provided meals and wage support to those impacted by the pandemic. For example, Flipkart Grocery and Logistics team donated vegetables to prepare warm meals for migrant workers in Bangalore through a Community Kitchen in collaboration with Flipkart Grocery and Logistics teams

Strategic Projects

The project ‘Samarth’, works with self-help groups, including local artisans, weavers and crafts persons and producers of raw and organic food items to provide them market access, training and support. Sellers under the programme receive time-bound incubation support from Flipkart that extends to a host of benefits such as cataloguing support and account management. Flipkart Samarth has supported over 7.5 lakh artisans

  • Partnered with several government entities including UP Khadi and Village Industries Board, Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), and Gujarat State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation to empower skilled yet underserved sections of society by inducting them into e-commerce.
  • In 2020, Flipkart Samarth saw a 12x growth in the number of partners who joined the program.
  • These artisans, who became part of Flipkart's annual festive season sale, saw a 2.5x increase in comparison to their usual non-festive-sale days.
  • Bridge the Gap Program strives to help the bottom-of-the-pyramid artisans and craftsmen get their products into the market.

Flipkart has also partnered with NITI Aayog in an effort to enhance the community experience for women entrepreneurs in India through the Women Entrepreneurship Platform.

Another way in which Flipkart has shown its commitment to the spirit of entrepreneurship and small businesses, is through one of our platforms - Flipkart Wholesale, that aims enhancing the wholesale ecosystem in India, which includes Kirana stores, and MSMEs. These businesses have access to an extensive selection of products, and can avail numerous schemes, and incentives in order to enhance their value creation.
  • Flipkart Wholesale has also rolled out instant, short-term, collateral-free credit solutions to its members in partnership with banks and fintech lenders.
